Meet the Staff – HR Manager Elizabeth Muller

Posted on July 31st, 2015

photoBefore I started at Child Advocates, I was a stay at home mom and looking to get back into the workplace. I heard about the of Data Specialist job at Child Advocates from a friend who was currently working as a GAL. So I spoke with Cindy Booth, Executive Director, a couple weeks later she called me in for an interview. I was given the job a couple days later. I became a full time employee on January 31, 2011. At that time, my duties were to assign cases to advocates, provide support to the advocates and working towards eliminating the wait list for CHINS cases in the Juvenile Court System. I was on the steering committee, was responsible for the data transfer from COMET to Optima, and trained staff and volunteers on Optima when it was introduced to the agency and continue to support its use. Optima is the online database in which all of our more than 6,000 cases are filed.

I’ve worked a number of jobs throughout the years with data experience which is what lead me into my first position with Child Advocates.  I had also previously worked as an HR specialist for a public school system which is what lead into the transition into my current position as HR manager.

Since I started at Child Advoates there has been significant growth, not just the number of kids, but the number of staff. I think it was an easy transition for me to HR because I had already developed a close relationship with a lot of staff members (because I worked so closely with the advocates on all their cases). The one thing that hasn’t changed is that no matter how big we get that everyone has a positive attitude and we get along really well. Considering the type of work we do, most everyone is typically in good spirits. The growth in children in the system has led to growth in the agency which in turn has created a need for a person to be in charge of HR here in the building. Here at Child Advocates we have incredible leadership and that has remained strong throughout all our growth.

I transitioned in the summer of 2014 as Manager of HR. My duties have shifted to supervise support staff, oversee benefits, payroll aspects, interviewing, new hire orientations, compliance and other human relations work.

I’ve been a staff member of Child Advocates for almost 5 years now. My favorite part about working for Child Advocates is that we’re helping children. That continues to be my motivation to keep going and keep doing the best I can in my career. We have a wonderful staff that is incredibly supportive and team-oriented. They also voted me employee of the year in 2013. It’s been a wonderful experience so far and I look forward to working here for many years to come. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.
